Two words: Bruce Campbell
Bruce Campbell is hilarious. He is self-deprecating. He is goofy. He was in the “Evil Dead” movies. How can you not love this guy?
Well you can get even more Bruce now - with his movie, “My Name is Bruce.” William Shunn at SciFi.com writes:
Lonely goth teen Jeff Graham (Taylor Sharpe) is the world’s biggest fan of Bruce Campbell (Campbell). Sadly, no one else in the small town of Gold Lick, Oregon, shares his obsession with the schlock-cinema icon, which hasn’t helped him much with the opposite sex. Determined to fix this, his best friend drags him in the middle of the night to the remote burial ground of Chinese laborers killed long ago in a mine cave-in. The two girls who meet them there are less than impressed by the clumsy come-ons Jeff cribs from the “Evil Dead” movies (which Campbell starred in), but that’s not the worst the night has in store. Their desecration of the graveyard awakens the vengeful warrior god Guan-di, and only Jeff escapes the attack with his life.
As Guan-di’s gruesome killings mount, the town lies terrified and helpless. Feeling responsible, Jeff drives to California to recruit the only expert he knows in fighting evil incarnate: Bruce Campbell himself. The man he finds, though, is a divorced, self-obsessed lout who lives in a dirty trailer, shares cheap whiskey with his dog and despises the movies that made his career. Campbell rudely refuses Jeff’s entreaties, which leaves the desperate teen no choice but to hit him over the head with a baseball bat and haul him back to Gold Lick in the trunk of his car.
Though angry at first at being kidnapped by what he assumes is a crazed fan, Campbell changes his tune when the townspeople greet him as a hero and a liberator. Believing the scenario to have been concocted as an elaborate birthday prank by his agent Mills, (Ted Raimi), the actor takes more than full advantage of the town’s hospitality—which includes sleazily hitting on Jeff’s skeptical mother, Kelly (Grace Thorsen), owner of the local honkytonk. Only when he leads a posse into the woods to confront Guan-di does the cowardly Campbell discover how real the menace to Gold Lick is—and how lethal.
The movie is open now in Chicago with limited engagements in various cities through December. I’m hoping it comes out on DVD or Blu-Ray soon.
If you haven’t seen Campbell’s movie “Bubba Ho-tep,” you must. It’s weird, freaky and all-out Campbell. Also check out his book When Chins Kill. Too too funny!

“Supernatural’s” Jared Padalecki single again
I read on the web site Gilmore Girls News that Jared Padalecki (who played Dean Forester in “Gilmore Girls”) has broken off his engagement to fiancee Sandra McCoy (the female Crossroads Demon in “Supernatural”). The site says they are “amicably separated.” The end of a relationship is always difficult in some way. I wish both Jared and Sandra happiness in their lives.
Jessie almost had heart failure when I told her this. I just about lost my hearing when she squealed in my ear. I’m shocked she didn’t know about this before because she LOVES Jared.
My husband, on the other hand, calls them “Jared Polydactyly” and “Jensen Ankles.” Very funny. Not.

“Supernatural” Episode Review: Heaven and Hell
The show started out where it left off last week - Castiel and Uriel found the Winchesters, Ruby and Anna in an abandoned house. Castiel told them Anna must die. “Anna’s an innocent girl,” Sam says. “She’s far from innocent,” Castiel tells him.
Uriel goes after Ruby and puts her in a choke hold. Dean tries to help her but Uriel throws Ruby aside and grabs Dean instead. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” he growls at Dean, and punches him in the face.
With two bright flashes, Uriel and Castiel disappear one after the other. Sam, Dean and Ruby look at each other in shock. They run to check on Anna, who’s sitting in front of a mirror. She’s drawn a spell in blood on it. When they ask her what she did, Anna says she sent the angels far away. She doesn’t know how, she just did it.
The group travels to Bobby’s and puts Anna in the demon-proof room he created. Ruby can’t enter the room but she does throw Dean a couple of hex bags for additional protection for Anna. Anna asks Dean if they’re scared. He looks at Ruby, then in typical Dean style, shrugs and says, “Nah.”
Sam does some research on Anna and finds our her parents were a deacon and a housewife. At age 2 1/2 Anna became hysterical whenever her father came near her. She said he wasn’t her real father. After being in therapy Anna returned to normal. When she overhears Sam and Dean talking about her Anna gets upset. She tells them she doesn’t know why the angels said she’s guilty.
Thinking perhaps Pamela the psychic can help, they take her to Pamela’s house. Even having been blinded by summoning Castiel, she knows Ruby is a demon and who Anna is. They go back to Bobby’s, where Pamela puts Anna under hypnosis. She tries to get Anna back to her childhood, to find out why Anna was afraid of her father. She tells Pamela she doesn’t know how she cast the spell that sent the angels away or how she was able to hear them speaking. When Pamela tries to make her regress further, Anna begins screaming and crying. Pamela brings her back from the regression and wakes her up. “Thank you Pamela, that helped,” Anna says. “I remember…I am angel.”
Anna tells Sam, Dean and Ruby not to fear her like they do the other angels. She tells them she knows Uriel and Castiel because she used to be even more powerful than them and they reported to her. She tells them she disobeyed God and fell to earth to become a human. “I ripped out my grace,” she said, and explained the pain she felt from doing so. Sam finds out that 9 months before Anna was born, a meteor flew over Ohio. This could have been Anna’s fall from heaven, and a second meteor that landed in Kentucky may have been her grace as it fell separately from her body. Heaven wants Anna dead for her disobeying; Hell wants her to use as a connection to hear the angels and be one step ahead of Heaven.
Ruby is afraid of Alistair, the demon Dean knew in Hell. She tells them either Sam needs to shape up his powers, Anna needs to get her grace back or they’re all dead.
Dean asks Anna why he was saved from Hell. She says she doesn’t know. He also asks her why she fell. Anna began talking about all the things humans experience - loyalty, love, physical contact, even chocolate cake. She says even the bad emotions are why she fell and never wants to go back. “Angels are perfect, cold and obedient. Only four angels have ever seen God’s face, and I’m not one of them.” Anna goes on to tell Dean that for 2,000 years she was assigned to watch and wait, waiting for instructions from an unknowable father. Dean tells her he can relate, thinking of his own father’s instructions and absence.
A century-old live oak stands in Kentucky and is called a miracle by the locals because it’s the oldest tree in the area. They think it may be Anna’s grace, as she calls her grace “pure creation.” The group travels to Kentucky, Dean laughing at the fact they have an angel and a demon in the back seat of their car.
When they arrive at the tree, Anna thinks it’s the one. But when she touches its trunk she finds someone has stolen her grace. Suddenly she hears the angels again - saying that if Dean doesn’t hand her over to the angels at midnight he’ll go back to hell. Sam asks her if there is any weapon that can be used against an angel. Anna says nothing they could get to in time.
Anna thanks Dean for his and Sam’s trying to help her. She says she knows she disobeyed; that Lucifer also disobeyed. She also tells Dean the angels talked about what he did in Hell and that it “wasn’t his fault.” Dean doesn’t want to talk about it. She tells him when he does want to talk about it there are people that can help him. Anna kisses Dean. “What was that for?” he asks. “It may be our last night on Earth,” she says. They fog up the windows in the back of Dean’s car, and very Titanic-like someone’s hand slides down the condensation on the window.
Ruby burns a hex bag, summoning Alistair. He has her knife; she tells him to keep it. “I just want to talk,” she tells him. She says she’ll give him Anna if she, Dean and Sam can just walk away. But Alistair has other ideas. Two demons grab Ruby and take her off for Alistair to torture by cutting her with her own knife. He demands she tell him where Anna is. “If I tell you, you kill me. But I’ll show you,” Ruby tells him.
Uriel appears to Dean just before midnight. He tells him Castiel isn’t with him because he has a weakness - he likes Dean. Dean tells Uriel that Anna got her grace back and she’s an angel again. Uriel grins and shows Dean a glowing vial on a necklace he’s wearing. “That’s not possible, because I have her grace,” he says. Uriel tells Dean he has one last chance to give up Anna or he’ll send Dean back to Hell. “Go for it,” Dean says.
Uriel and Castiel show up where the group is hiding. Sam asks them how they found out where they were. Dean looks down, saddened. “Either they kill me or they kill you,” Anna says to Dean. She kisses him. “You did the best you could,” she says to him. “I forgive you.” Castiel looks at Anna. “I’m sorry,” he says. “No, you’re not,” Anna says with a brave face.
Suddenly Alistair shows up with Ruby and the two demons. He demands the angels to give Anna to him. Castiel tells Alistair to leave. This starts a fight - Uriel kills one of the demons. Alistair knocks Castiel to the ground. Anna grabs the vial from around Uriel’s neck and throws it to the ground. She screams at the others to close their eyes. Anna’s grace flows out of the vial and she inhales it into her body. Alistair rushes toward her and the light kills him instantly. In a huge blue-white flash, Anna is gone. “This isn’t over,” Uriel says. “Looks over to me,” Dean remarks. Uriel and Castiel disappear. It looked to me like Castiel may have been pleased with the series of events.
After it’s all over Sam says, “Anna’s a big time angel now. She must be happy wherever she is.” With a pained look on his face, Dean murmurs, “I doubt it.”
Sitting on the Metallicar having a beer, Dean tells Sam he knows Sam heard Alistair say they knew each other in Hell. Sam said he wouldn’t push Dean to talk about it. Suddenly Dean begins to open up.
Dean tells Sam while he seemed to be gone four months, to him in Hell it was 40 years. He was tied to a rack and tortured horribly every day. Every night Alistair would make him an offer: he would take him off the rack if he would put souls on. Dean told Alistair no every night for 30 years. Then he broke. With tears in his eyes, Dean tells Sam he started doing to other souls what had been done to him. He lost count of how many he tortured. He says the things he did to them were beyond belief.
Sam tells Dean he held on for 30 years, more than anyone else would have been able to last. This doesn’t comfort Dean; he says he wishes he couldn’t still feel it inside him.

Next episode: January 15, 2009 - Sam and Dean will investigate the haunting of one of the schools they attended while they were teenagers. The investigation shows also what school mean to the Winchester brothers and why women are so into Dean.
The young versions of Sam and Dean reveal the past where the former used to dislike traveling and being on the road a lot while the latter took things easier and watched Sam’s back. Sam found it difficult to create new circle of friends every time they move in order to follow their demon-chasing father and thus was often being bullied. Meanwhile, Dean found time to socialize and pursue girls.
The episode is titled “After School Special.” Brock Kelly (”Days of Our Lives”) is young Dean while Colin Ford (who played a young Hellboy in “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army”) will reprise his role as young Sam.
Jensen Ackles (right) as Dean WInchester; Brock Kelly (left) as young Dean.

Spooky music news!
Just saw this on my internet radio window:
Yahoo! Music News reports:
[Maroon 5] holed up in Harry Houdini’s mansion in Los Angeles to write the album, a residence that producer Eric Valentine swears was haunted after he mistook a ghost for his then-girlfriend one night.
“If there were spirits there, they were benevolent and we came out with some good songs, so they must have helped us out,” he reasons.

“Ghost Hunters” Episode Review: Fortuna and Topton
TAPS traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to investigate an apartment house and a restaurant/residence.
First, they went to Mike Fortuna’s apartment house. Located in an area where many college students lived, Mike said he had been having trouble renting out rooms on the fourth floor of the house because of reported paranormal activity.
Mike told Jason and Grant that two students were in a 4th floor room when they heard tapping on the window. When they looked they saw a woman in white at the window. “Help me,” she said.
Tony said he used to live in the room at the top of the stairs. One day he was looking for a pair of scissors. Frustrated, he said out loud to himself, “There’s no scissors in here.” A man’s voice behind him said, “No, there’s not.” Tony turned around and there was no one else in the room. Tony said his roommate was on the third floor listening to music when he heard a woman singing coming from the 4th floor. He went to investigate but there wasn’t anyone on the 4th floor.
The team began checking out the house. Investigator Andy Andrews found the roof of the house was flat, and he could easily stand and look into the 4th floor window. He and Grant climbed out the window and onto the roof, where they found several lawn chairs, lots of trash and beer bottles. The roof had easy access from Mike’s building and the neighboring building. Grant thought it looked like students hung out there a lot.
Grant and Andy interviewed one of Mike’s neighbors. He said one of the girls in the house next door goes onto the roof to smoke. He said she has short black hair. Andy said he would compare that description with what Mike’s tenants saw.
Andy talked about the importance of training investigators. He was working with investigator Sheri Toczko and explaining how household appliances such as TVs, DVD players, VCRs and microwaves can give off EMF. They found a fire box in the hallway that emitted very high EMF, so they wouldn’t be able to use their EMF meters without getting false readings. In the basement they found a wire that was conducting a considerable amount of EMF. Grant said ungrounded cables and electrical boxes can also emit high EMF.
On the roof, Grant made some noise to see if Andy could hear it. He even sang part of “Yankee Doodle,” which was funny. Andy said when Grant sang it sounded like it was coming from the floor below him instead of from above. The acoustics were misleading in the old building.
John Egbosimbah, a former resident, talked to Grant and Andy on the phone. He saw the woman tapping at the window. He said he and a friend were working on the 4th floor when they heard the tapping. He looked and saw the woman. He said she had blond hair and she said, “Help me.” This didn’t match the description of the neighbor with short black hair, but still didn’t answer the question of the woman’s identity. Catarina and Conrad, two of Mike’s other neighbors, said they have seen blond girls on the roof smoking. Catarina even said one of her friends was blond and she knew she went onto the roof, so the woman in the window was probably Catarina’s friend.
None of the TAPS team thought the building was haunted. It was obvious it was just odd noises from an old building and they were able to debunk pretty much everything they saw and heard.
While doing EVP work with Steve, Brian Harnois found a “pull my finger” pen and a lot of fun was had with its raspberry sounds.
Upon reviewing their footage, no video or audio evidence was found. After checking out the footage, the team stopped at the world-famous Geno’s for some cheesesteaks. Steve was hitting on some girls, which wasn’t a surprise. But he was a gentleman, so I have to give him credit for that.
At the reveal, Jason and Grant asked Tony to repeat his experience talking about looking for a pair of scissors. “That was a very ambiguous answer,” Grant said about Tony hearing “No there’s not.” The voice didn’t say, “There’s no scissors in here” or “No, there’s not, Tony” or something more inclined toward being a spirit. Someone could have heard him from another room or even the roof and just made a comment to his question. They did advise Mike and Tony the acoustics in the building are unusual.
Jason and Grant told them about women with blond hair going to the roof to smoke. Mike’s neighbors said someones people go on the roof and end up getting locked out of the building, which may indicate why the woman knocked on the window and asked for help - she was stuck on the roof and was a quite real person, not a ghost at all.
Mike and Tony seemed relieved their house wasn’t haunted. Perhaps after explaining the house’s odd acoustical quirks the students woudn’t be afraid to rent from him anymore.

TAPS family member Rick Bugera joined the team at the Topton House, a restaurant/residence. Rick has investigated the Topton House before and recommended TAPS do an investigation as well.
Topton House owner Francine Gore welcomed the TAPS team and showed them around the restaurant area of the building. She said a small girl died in the dining room and she enjoys tripping people as they walk through. Francine also said a glass of soda was placed on one of the tables and it moved on its own.
Francine saw a woman wearing a bun in her hair in the bar area. When she turned to look at her the woman was gone. A week later Rick saw a woman wearing a blue dress with a bustle in the back walk through a doorway near the bar. The chef told Francine metal plates have flown off the shelves in the kitchen. Francine’s daughter Jennifer smelled the scent of roses in the cellar and heard murmuring there. Her daughter Andrea is sensitive to the spirits and feels them when she goes into the cellar. She cannot see them, but feels their presence.
Francine told TAPS she thinks the spirits are friendly and doesn’t want them to leave. A customer told Francine there were 12 spirits in the building! TAPS respected Francine’s wish to leave the spirits as they were, and told the team, “We’re just here to study.”
Brian Harnois got a bit concerned about Steve and Sheri’s close connection. He said it was obvious they liked one another but he didn’t want it to interrupt the investigation. He pulled Steve aside and told him not to let things get out of hand, as Jason wouldn’t stand for it. Steve said if he and Sheri pursued a relationship, Sheri would no longer be a member of TAPS.
In the cellar, Andy saw a hole in the ceiling. He could see out into the garden from it, which is how they guessed the smell of roses might be coming into the cellar. Grant used a bottle of cologne to try and debunk it. He sprayed it near the hole and within a few minutes they could smell it. Francine’s daughter, Jennifer Mikaliunas, didn’t smell the cologne at first. She said she didn’t go into the cellar by herself because she didn’t like it.
Brian put a glass of soda on a table in the dining room and put a still camera on it, to capture any movement the glass might make.
Andrea Mikaliunas, another of Francine’s daughters, went into the basement with Brian and investigator Amy Andrews. “I’m sure they know we’re down here,” Andrea said. She felt the spirits were hiding. In some areas of the cellar she felt a tingling in her fingers and a chill, saying it felt like someone was standing close to her. “When I come downstairs by myself I can feel them walking down the stairs behind me,” Andrea said. TAPS normally doesn’t allow anyone to investigate on their own, but they gave Andrea a digital recorder and let her go into the cellar alone to do some EVP work. When she came back up she said she didn’t feel the spirits were down there anymore. She asked Brian if they could have moved to another part of the building, and he said yes, if they didn’t want to be seen or heard they could have hidden somewhere else.
Francine asked Grant what percentage of the places they investigate are debunked. Grant told her about 80%. He also explained their reason for showing proof, not just personal experiences. “I could go into the cellar and a ghost could walk up and shake my hand,” Grant said. “But if I tell you about it with no proof to back it up I can’t expect you to believe me.”
A Reiki (healing energy) master, Amy worked with Andrea on the front porch of the Topton House. She wanted to see what type of energy Andrea might have had that would cause her to feel the spirits. After doing some Reiki work, Amy told Andrea she has “great energy.” Andrea said after the Reiki session she felt “lighter” and “calmer.”
After the investigation, Francine and her husband Gary thanked the team, who went home to look over the evidence.
They found nothing during the analysis. “It’s going to be tough to tell Francine; she’s very spiritual,” Jason said. “She’s had sensitives in there but has never questioned them,” he added. “We need to teach her to be more skeptical and not believe every story she hears.” He also mentioned the Topton House had a reputation for being haunted, which could contribute to the believability of people’s claims.
At the reveal, Jason and Grant met with Gary and Francine. They told them about using Grant’s cologne to recreate the rose scent in the cellar. Francine said she doesn’t have any rosebushes in the back garden where the hole in the cellar ceiling is. Grant talked about matrixing, which is when we think we smell something even if something relating to that object isn’t in the area. “Sometimes two scents mixing together can make us think we smell something completely different,” he said.
“We’re left with things we can’t disprove,” Jason said. “We had some experiences but have no proof.” Francine and Gary were pleased with the investigation, but Francine said she was “a little disappointed but understanding” of their not finding anything to prove it.
—————————————–
Jason talked to Frank De Angelis, the sound engineer whose equipment flew up and smacked him in the chin during the New Bedford Armory investigation.
“What happened?” Jason asked Frank. While everyone was feeling cold spots at the time, Frank said he felt like something went through him. “I felt like I was being singled out,” he said. He had never seen the footage of the investigation. Jason played it for him and Frank said it made him feel “uncomfortable” and “uneasy.” But he did watch it and Jason told him he needs to try and understand what happened.
Frank wasn’t convinced something hit him until he saw the thermal footage of his face. There was an obvious hot spot on his chin, which was the inflammation of his skin after being hit by his equipment.
Frank said he did feel something (paranormal) happened to him. Jason did a thorough walkthrough of the area where they were when this happened and couldn’t find anything that would explain what happened to Frank. Jason reminded Frank TAPS is a family and they care about each other, which seemed to comfort Frank.
Unfortunately these are the only images of the Topton House I was able to find online:
But I found lots of pictures of the show’s sexy-voiced opening narrator, Mike Rowe. No, he’s not only the host of “Dirty Jobs,” he also narrates shows such as “Ghost Hunters,” “American Chopper” and “Deadliest Catch.”
“Tonight, on Ghost Hunters!” Show opening narrator Mike Rowe. Not sure what he’s got there, but let’s pretend it’s ectoplasm!
Nifty gifties (no mall required!)
I’ve been getting some very cool catalogs in the mail lately. A couple have some really neat paranormal/goth-related items in them I thought I’d share.
Please note: I do not receive any type of product, endorsement or reward for directing my readers to these sites. I simply enjoy their products, have ordered from one of the catalogs and liked the products.
———————————————————————
Noble Collection has lots of really cool collectibles including:
- Batman & Superman
- Lord of the Rings
- Troy
- Indiana Jones
- 300
- Chronicles of Narnia
- Harry Potter
- Pirates of the Caribbean
“Batman,’ “Pirates,” “Indiana Jones” collectibles.
“The Lord of the Rings” collectibles.

A beautiful catalog full of Victorian-era gifts, jewelry and clothing. Items that might be of special interest to goths and vampires alike (click on the image to go to catalog page):
The top hat reminds me of Gary Oldman as Dracula in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”
The red cloche hat is very Angelina Jolie in “Changeling.”
The lace cuffs on the right remind me of the ones Lestat and Louis wore in “Interview With the Vampire.”
———————————————————————
And my personal FAVORITE catalog, chock full of Medieval and goth goodness - Design Toscano! I have ordered several items from them, including the dragon clock, speakers, cell phone and iPod holder pictured. They are made of cast resin. I love them!
Left to right: dragon speakers, iPod holder and cell phone holder. I own all of these and they are great. Cast resin, nice and heavy, great quality. The speakers have a USB plug. I have a Samsung Alias cell phone and it fits in the holder just fine, even with the power cord plugged into the side. When I plug in my iPod to recharge I put it in the holder upside down so it will still fit with the cord plugged in.
I also have this dragon travel alarm clock. The dragon itself is great, cast resin and heavy enough it doesn’t tip over. I don’t think it’s Design Toscano’s fault, but the clock part is really cheap in quality and look. Once inside the dragon it looks okay. I have discarded mine and use a piece of stained wood I glued an analog clock face to that I bought from the craft store. It gives it a bit of a Medieval look.
Medieval goodies for home or office, including a cool sculpture of the Knights of the Round Table, or knight bookends.
Gargoyles galore! Inside, outside, for your desk, your garden, your wall, you name it!
Design Toscano has lots of neat Egyptian stuff, too.
“Supernatural” Episode Review: I Know What You Did Last Summer
This episode of “Supernatural” started out with the present, but looks back a few months as well. In order to best summarize the episode I’ll start with the past.
Six months ago
In his grief over Dean’s death, Sam conjures up the Crossroads Demon. It appears as a sarcastic male demon. Sam showed the demon Ruby’s knife but the demon wouldn’t make a deal. Stabbing the demon’s hand, Sam demands the demon take him to Hell and release Dean. The demon refuses, saying it’s not about Sam’s soul, but the fact that the demons have everything the way they want now. Angry, Sam finishes off the demon.
Sam goes back to his hotel room. He seems to know something’s wrong, and suddenly he’s attacked by two demons, one male and one female. As the male demon holds Sam, the female demon reveals she’s Ruby, this time in the body of another blond woman. Ruby tells Sam she promised Lilith she would find and kill Sam so she could get out of Hell. She raises her knife to Sam’s chest but kills the male demon instead. She tells Sam they need to get out of there - fast.
Driving along in the car, Sam demands Ruby tell him who asked her to help him. “I’m a fugitive now,” Ruby says. “I took a great risk getting back to you. I’m just trying to help.” “Can you bring Dean back?” Sam asks. “No one is powerful enough to do that,” Ruby says. Sam asks Ruby whose body she’s in. “Just some secretary,” Ruby says. Sam tells her to leave the woman’s body or he’ll send her back to Hell.
In a hospital, a Jane Doe coma patient is being removed from life support. Just as the doctors think she has finally died, she sits straight up in bed, gasping. Ruby has taken over the woman’s body. “Where can I get some French fries?” she asks.
Ruby catches up with Sam later, this time as the brunette Jane Doe. “I recycled,” she proudly tells Sam, meaning she didn’t take over a live body. “The apartment was empty,” she promises. She tells Sam she can’t bring Dean back but she can give him something else - Lilith. Sam is immediately ready to go kill Lilith but Ruby tells him no, that Lilith is cooking up something apocalyptic. In exchange for his patience and sobriety, Ruby offers to teach Sam “everything she knows,” so he can kill Lilith.
Sam struggles with his psychic gifts at first, ending up with nosebleeds and unable to beat a demon’s strength. Ruby tries to comfort Sam over losing Dean but he brushes her off. “I used to be human,” she says. “I remember what it’s like to lose someone.” Then she kisses Sam and he freaks out. “That’s just so wrong!” he tells her. But Ruby persists, and they lock in a lover’s embrace. Clothes begin flying in various directions, and you can guess what happens next.
Ruby tells Sam Lilith is in town. He’s ready to head out the door but Ruby tells him he’s not ready. “I want to strike first,” Sam tells her. Ruby tells Sam he’s the only one who can kill Lilith, and that the other demons want her dead. “Do you want to go down fighting Lilith?” Ruby asks Sam. “It’s not what Dean would have wanted. This is suicide.” But Sam goes after Lilith anyway.
At a suburban home, Sam starts sneaking around looking for Lilith. He sees a young girl sitting at a dining table and thinks it’s Lilith. He’s about to attack her when she turns to him and cries, “I want to go home!” Two demons attack Sam. Just when it seems dark for Sam Ruby shows up and kills one of the demons with her knife. The other one goes after Ruby but Sam manages to exorcise it with his powers. Nose bleeding, he realizes if it wasn’t for her he might be dead.
———————————-
Now
Sam and Dean are in a bar. Sam is pretending to be drunk so he and Dean can hustle pool. But when Sam sees Ruby sitting at the bar he gives up the game.
Ruby tells the Winchesters she knows the demons are looking for a woman named Anna Milton. “You need to find her before they do,” she says. Dean wants to blow Ruby off, but Sam insists they listen and head out.
In a behavioral medical center, Anna Milton is being asked questions by a psychiatrist. “Do you know why you’re here, Anna?” “I was trying to warn them,” Anna says. “Who?” the doctor asks. “Everyone,” Anna replies. She tells the doctor she knows The End is coming - the apocalypse. She says a demon named Lilith is trying to break 66 of over 600 seals and no one knows which 66 they are. She says she hears the angels speaking and that they are losing because it’s impossible to stop Lilith.
Later an orderly comes in to give Anna her medication. She looks at him and realizes he’s a demon. She manages to telekinetically move a dresser in front of him, causing him to hit his head on the door of her room. He gets knocked out and Anna escapes.
Posing as detectives (Sam with his slicked-back hair looks even younger) Sam and Dean interview Anna’s doctor. She tells them Anna is schizophrenic and with her father being a minister, as she got worse religious overtones became prominent in Anna’s sketches. They look through Anna’s sketch book and find images of the seal of the Rising of the Witnesses and a drawing of the demon Samhain. There’s also a drawing of a stained glass window, like the ones seen in a church.
Sam and Dean go to the Miltons’ house, only to find Anna’s parents dead on the living room floor. The demons had gotten to them first. Sam smelled sulfur around their bodies. As they look around the house, Sam finds a picture of Anna with her parents in a church. The stained glass window behind them looks like the one Anna drew. Since her faith might make her feel better, Sam figures Anna must be at the church.
When they arrive at the church Sam calls for Anna. “It’s Sam,” he tells her. “Sam Winchester?” Anna asks. She steps out and looks at Sam and Dean in wonder. “They talk about you all the time!” Anna says, meaning the angels. “I feel like I know you!” Anna tells Sam and Dean she overhears the angels talking in her head, but doesn’t think they’re aware of her. “They talk about you a lot,” she says to Dean, “but most of them don’t like you,” she tells Sam. He looks concerned. “When did the voices start?” Dean asks Anna. “September 18th,” she says. “They said, ‘Dean Winchester is saved.’” Funny it was September 18th - that’s my wedding anniversary.
Dean realizes the demons want Anna because if she can hear them the demons can use her as a way of finding out what the angels are up to. Just then Ruby bursts in. Anna is terrified. “It’s OK, she’s here to help,” Sam tells Anna. Ruby tells them the demons followed them from Anna’s house to the church and they have to get out fast. When a statue of the Virgin Mary starts crying tears of blood, they know it’s too late. Anna runs and Ruby follows, finding Anna crouched in a closet in terror.
Ruby tells Sam to exorcise the demon but Sam can’t - the demon is too powerful. The demon goes after Dean and asks if he remembers him from Hell - and Dean does. “Alistair,” Dean snarls. Sam manages to stab Alistair with Ruby’s knife but it doesn’t do any good - Alistair just pulls it out. Sam and Dean jump out a window and escape.
Back in their hotel, patching up their wounds, Sam is confident Ruby took Anna someplace safe. “We just need to lay low and wait for Ruby to contact us,” he tells Dean. Dean wants to know why Sam trusts Ruby so much. “She saved my life,” Sam says. Dean still doesn’t understand, so Sam tells him the story of how Ruby came back from Hell, about their love affair and how she saved him from the demons.
There’s a knock at the door. “Who is it?” Dean asks. “Room service,” a woman says from the other side of the door. “Not now!” Dean tells her. “I have clean towels, sir,” the woman says. Dean opens the door and the maid comes in. She puts the clean towels in the bathroom, then hands Sam a slip of paper. “I’m at this address,” she tells him. Sam is confused, then he realizes the maid has been taken over by Ruby. She tells them there are demons in the hallway and parking lot, so to escape quickly and quietly and meet her later.
In an old house, Sam and Dean find Ruby and Anna. In his own man-of-few-words way, Dean thanks Ruby for saving Sam and apologizes for not believing in her. Anna asks if she can call her parents, as they would be worried about her. Sam breaks the sad news that they are dead. Anna begins to cry. Then she hears something in her head. “They’re coming!” she says. Ruby hides Anna. The door bursts open and wind blows in. Then Castiel and Uriel enter the room.
Uriel wants to know why Ruby is there, he refers to her as “a stain.” Then Castiel tells them, “We’re here for Anna.” Sam asks why. Castiel says, “Because she has to die.”

In next week’s episode, Anna and Dean have a pre-apocalyptic hookup, they all have to fight for their lives and a lot of things appear to be happening. The CW’s web site reads:
Anna remembers her past and Sam and Dean finally understand why Castiel and Uriel want her dead. However, they disagree with the angels’ orders and try to help Anna restore an important part of her past so she can be saved. Meanwhile, Alastair and his demons continue to close in on Anna and the brothers.
The last time Sam and Dean defied the angels’ orders, Castiel was glad Dean made a stand and a decision. I wonder if he will be so pleased this time?

“Ghost Hunters” - 2nd Annual All Access Roundtable
Hi everyone, I finally got to watch the 2nd Annual Ghost Hunters Roundtable. In case you missed it here’s a recap.
Grant Wilson (left) and Jason Hawes (right), from The Atlantic Paranormal Society.
Josh Gates from Sci Fi’s Destination Truth hosted the Roundtable. He was also the host of the Halloween Ghost Hunters Live show at Fort Delaware. Josh started the show talking about what TAPS would discuss and show some never-before-seen footage of their first investigation.
Josh Gates, host of Destination Truth, with a cast of what is said to be a Bigfoot footprint.
Jason said that when a place is declared haunted it may find it’s getting more business. “This is completely unintentional,” Jason said. He and Grant talked about how some of the places they’ve investigated rely on donations or are trying to raise money to perform restorations, and how more business helps them financially.
A perfect example of this came from the owners of the Cashtown Inn. After TAPS investigated and found paranormal activity there, Cashtown had over 250,000 hits to their web site! The owners of the Inn said it was an absolute pleasure working with the members of TAPS. Jason said the St. Augustine lighthouse’s tours have increased. Grant said fans have made their own t-shirts, for example, ones that have a picture of Fort Delaware and read, “Don’t go to Casement 11!”
Speaking of fans, Jason and Grant both talked about meeting their fans. They’ve said people love to meet each other as well and sometimes new paranormal groups are formed from those meetings. Jason also said a few marriages have come out of fan meetings!
Josh asked Jason and Grant the number one question on everyone’s mind: “Are you really plumbers?”
The answer is: YES! Jason and Grant both still work for Roto-Rooter. They are even featured on Roto-Rooter’s web site! Check it out here!! It’s about halfway down the page.
Yep, they really are plumbers.
Jason said that working full time for Roto-Rooter and filming the show became too much. “We got sick,” Grant said. Roto-Rooter told them they knew how important the show was to them, so they offered them both time off for filming and that they could come back and work when they could. So on the episodes of “Ghost Hunters” where you see Jason and Grant working, they really are doing a Roto-Rooter job!
One of the myths surrounding the show is that Jason and Grant are wealthy. They laughed at this idea. One one of the episodes Jason had a cookout for the TAPS team at his house. It was a pleasant little Cape Cod house - not a big mansion. Grant said during one investigation the homeowner told them his car keys kept getting moved around. Grant put his keys on the counter to see if this would happen to his keys. Someone mistook the Mini logo on his keychain for a Bentley logo and said he must be rich because he drives a Bentley. Grant got a good laugh out of this.
A Mini logo and a Bentley logo…I can see from how at a distance these could look similar…
Next Josh asked about the active infrared camera and its use to TAPS. Steve explained how it works (picking up light from a lower section of the spectrum that the human eye can’t see) and some examples of infrared images TAPS caught during investigations were shown. These included:
- A lamp moving across a table at the Myrtles Plantation
- A door opening and shutting on its own
- Covers being pulled off Grant’s feet as he slept
- Shadowy images of people moving around
- A picture frame moving across a table at the Cashtown Inn
- A figure moving toward the camera at Eastern State Penitentiary
- A closet door opening and closing on its own while Jason was in the room
A sample infrared image; this one is of a man hiding.
Amy Bruni, TAPS’ newest member, was introduced. If you saw the live event at Fort Delaware you saw Amy manning one of the computers. Amy was a TAPS family member and due to her balance of believer and skeptic, level-headedness and research of the paranormal was asked to become a full-time member of TAPS. She reminds me some of Kris Williams with the types of questions she asks and her reactions to things that are going on. She’s very calm and inquisitive.
Amy Bruni.
When asked what things TAPS doesn’t use during an investigation, Jason mentioned the following:
Though we have no problem with psychics, we don’t use them during investigations,” Jason said. TAPS doesn’t believe in “orbs.” “We don’t want to summon a ghost that wasn’t there before,” Grant said. Which is why TAPS doesn’t use Ouija boards or hold seances. “We don’t talk about the activity in front of the homeowner until we’re finished,” Grant said. This is understandable, as the homeowner may be upset or try to make additional activity happen before the investigation is finished. “We don’t run,” Grant said. “We don’t investigate graveyards,” Jason said. His concern with this is that cemeteries deemed haunted are often hangouts for youngsters and can be trashed by toppled grave markers and graffiti.
“It’s not typical for you to use another investigator as bait, is it?” Josh asked. Jason said no, but on occasion they have done this. On one investigation several viewers wrote in upset about Steve being alone in the woods. “The fact that you saw him means there was a cameraman with him, so he wasn’t entirely alone,” Jason said.
Josh also asked how the thermal camera works. Thermal cameras record temperature fluctuations. These have shown, in some TAPS investigations, handprints, footsteps and full-bodied apparitions. For example, if I placed my hand on my desk for a few seconds and then walked away, my hand would leave a heat signature on the desk. Knowing that I had recently been in the room, TAPS would know it was me that left the handprint. However, if no one was in the room and they found a heat signature like that, it could mean there was an entity in the area. Thermal cameras can even be used to find rodents in a building, as Jason mentioned. Sometimes what’s thought to be paranormal might be the sounds of rats or mice.
The white spots in this image are paw prints left behind by an animal that recently walked across the floor.
Steve said some of the most compelling thermal evidence was caught at the Crescent Hotel investigation. “We just couldn’t debunk it,” he said. While Jason was having a reading done by a psychic, a large, red blob of energy appeared to move from Jason to the psychic on the thermal camera. This energy is basically heat. The team speculated how the energy could be moving from Jason to the psychic - was the psychic “pulling” energy from Jason?
A clip of a figure moving around at the end of a hallway produced a rather loud “What the frig?” from Grant (this always cracks me up). They also showed a clip of the figure of a woman that was seen through the thermal at Henson Studios in California. There weren’t any women in the area Jason and Grant were investigating when they saw the figure. A clip from the first Fort Delaware investigation was also shown; one where a figure appeared to peek out from behind a wall and then dart back behind it. There was no one else in the area being investigated.
Thermal image of a dog. The parts that are the lightest are the warmest, like the dog’s eyes and ears, where blood vessels are close to the skin.
After a commercial break some footage of two cats was shown. These were Steve’s cats, Home Depot and Sassy Lashes (who apparently lives up to her name). Steve is quite the Kitty Daddy, as is Dave. He was so thrilled to see his babies. Josh asked Steve how the cats were doing and Steve lit up like a Christmas tree. Beaming he said, “They’re doing fine!” I heard the reason one of his cats is named Home Depot is because he found him as a stray outside of a Home Depot store and adopted him. I love cats too.
Josh went on to talk about the goofy relationship between Steve and Tango. Tango gets on Steve about touching everything. They played several clips of Steve picking things up and Tango fussing at him not to touch anything. “You’ve got a problem!” Tango told him in one clip. Steve thinks it may be from his training as a police officer that he likes to pick things up.
Dave Tango (left) and Steve Gonsalves (right) at a fan event. These two are a trip; they act like brothers.
Most people watching the show never get to see the Ghost Hunters crew. Grant talked about their amazing capabilities, such as walking backward down the winding staircase of the St. Augustine lighthouse in complete darkness. The whole TAPS team recognized the work of the crew and Grant clapped for them. “When they have experiences, we turn the cameras on them,” Jason said. And the crew has had experiences.
- One cameraman was pushed by an unseen entity. He was very shaken up by this experience.
- The cameraman working with Grant at the Stanley Hotel talked about how the table and chair completely lifted off the ground and startled Grant.
- After a shadow flew past him at the Eastern State Pen he and TAPS investigator Brian Harnois ran out of the area, prompting the infamous “Dude, run!”
- The sound engineer’s mixer (which is quite heavy) flew up and hit him in the chin, knocking him flat
Since he has an interest in filmmaking, I asked Dave about the mixer that hit the sound engineer. He said the mixer the man was carrying is about the size of the box a frozen dinner comes in and weighs about 10 pounds (that includes audio cable, spare batteries, etc.). When the mixer flew up, the engineer had both hands on the microphone boom which meant he couldn’t have moved it with his hands. No one was near him, he didn’t trip or do anything that would have caused the mixer to fly up the way it did. The poor guy didn’t even have a chance to try and catch himself; he fell flat on his back. It really scared everyone. Even Dave said it was freaky, and he’s not a believer. That’s only the second time I’ve heard him say that about the show.
“This is your fourth year on “Ghost Hunters,” you just had your third live investigation and you’re at your second Roundtable,” Josh said. Jason talked about how TAPS started out as just a friendly gathering and now look where they are.
One of the coolest investigations TAPS has had was the one at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. “We actually had to get clearance from the Pentagon!” Grant said. The US Air Force called TAPS to investigate because of their outstanding work and reputation. Some of the best evidence the team found at the base included:
- The EMF meter reading climbed and fell as if someone passed in front of it
- A black mass blocked out light in the warehouse but it wasn’t one of the TAPS team or crew
- Kris Williams and Kristyn Gartland heard a growling sound twice
- When Jason and Grant asked a spirit to close a door and turn on a flashlight, it did both
“What qualities do you look for in a paranormal investigator?” Josh asked. Jason and Grant both mentioned either believer or skeptic or a combination of both, someone who is stable, trustworthy and has real-world knowledge.
One of the most recent pieces of equipment used on TAPS’ investigations is the K2 meter. It measures magnetic fields and frequencies. “We don’t base conclusions on a case with it,” Jason carefully added.
Josh described Steve as “a fussy older guy with lots of phobias” and Tango as “a fussy younger guy with lots of phobias.” They all laughed at this. He asked Steve if his relationship with Tango started out as mentor-student. Steve said yes, but said he thinks Tango is one of the best investigators they have because he has a great eye and a great mind. The show aired some clips of Steve and Tango teasing each other, including the times when Steve offered Tango money to do silly things, like eat a dead moth, climb into the gigantic soup kettle in a ship’s galley and crawl into a bug-infested area, the latter which caused Tango to freak out when he saw a big millipede. But he got his money.
Ah, the office. Josh asked about TAPS office in Warwick, Rhode Island. “We don’t get to spend much time there,” Grant said. “And it’s usually full of fan mail.” They showed some clips of the TAPS team sorting through fan mail. They said they try to read it all, because fans take time and effort with it and it’s an honor for them to receive it. They all said they were thankful for the fans’ appreciation and support. Many pieces of fan artwork hang on the walls of the office. They have received many drawings and caricatures of themselves. Sometimes they also receive unusual gifts such as Steve got a popcorn ball after he mentioned he liked popcorn and someone sent Jason and Grant some salmon jerky and mosquito catchers. One fan sent a wood etching with a picture of the team and one sent a TAPS license plate.
“What’s the future of technology for TAPS?” Josh asked Steve. Steve said he hopes there will be some development in EMF frequency. Grant said, “I wish we could get a Smell-O-Meter,” and laughed. Jason said if anyone had any good ideas that would benefit the field of paranormal research to let them know.
Jason said the original premise for Ghost Hunters was to be a drama based on them but since that couldnt’ possibly be recreated, it was suggested they do a reality show. Jason said they turned down 5 companies because they didn’t think they could do it. Then Pilgrim Films pitched 10 episodes, which Jason and Grant agreed to and thought the show would be cancelled after that. Little did they know!
The show then aired the original presentation reel for Ghost Hunters. They investigated a private residence. It was surprising to see Steve without his tattoo sleeves. They heard an EVP of a child’s voice, which made the homeowner feel sad and she began to cry. Jason comforted her, saying it’s always difficult when you find out there’s an entity in your home.
“How do you feel?” Josh asked them after the clip aired. “Old,” Jason said, and they laughed. He and Grant said it was great to see how far they’ve come and are glad to be open to talking about paranormal investigating without being mocked. Jason said the day he heard the show was a go was the day his twin sons were born. While they thought they’d only do 10 episodes, Ghost Hunters is at almost 100 episodes!

Darkness, candles bring thoughts of séances
Last night we had an unexpected power outage. The lights dimmed and flickered around 7:30 pm. Shortly thereafter they went out completely and we were in the dark. I love candles and always have lots around, so I lit several of them so we could see to eat our supper. “With all these candles we should have a séance,” Dave joked.
Which got me to thinking about séances, their origins, purpose and results. Of course I turned to good old Wikipedia, which tells us:
A séance is an attempt to communicate with spirits. The word “séance” comes from the French word for “seat,” “session” or “sitting,” from the Old French “seoir,” “to sit.” In French, the word’s meaning is quite general: one may, for example, speak of “une séance de cinéma” (”a movie session”). In English, however, the word came to be used specifically for a meeting of people who are gathered to receive messages from ghosts or spirits or to listen to a spirit medium discourse with or relay messages from spirits; in modern English usage, participants need not be seated while engaged in a séance. The popularity of séances grew dramatically with the founding of the religion of Spiritualism in the mid-nineteenth century.
So, how does one go about conducting a séance? There are several different ways.
1. Mediums
Mediumship is the term used to describe an act where the practitioner attempts to receive messages from spirits of the dead and other spirits that the practitioner believes exist. A medium may slip into a trance-like state during the séance; many have an assistant who writes down messages the medium conveys.
2. Channeling
Channeling is a process by which the medium allows a spirit limited use of his or her physical body to communicate with the sitters present. It is assumed to offer opportunities for more positive and mutually respectful interaction between the living medium and the spirit.
3. Spirit boards
Spirit boards, also known as talking boards, or Ouija boards. Participants in the séance place one or two fingers on the planchette (French for “little table”) which is in the middle of the board. The appointed medium asks questions of the spirit(s) with whom they are attempting to communicate.
4. Spirit trumpets, slates, tables and cabinets
In more old-fashioned séance, spirit trumpets were horn-shaped speaking tubes that were said to magnify the whispered voices of spirits to audible range. Spirit slates consisted of two chalkboards bound together that, when opened, were said to reveal messages written by spirits. Séance tables were special light-weight tables which were said to rotate, float, or levitate when spirits were present. Spirit cabinets were portable closets into which mediums were placed, often bound with ropes, in order to prevent them from manipulating the various aforementioned tools.
The exposure of supposed mediums whose use of séance tools derived from the techniques of stage magic has been disturbing to many believers in spirit communication. Stage magicians like John Neville Maskelyne and Harry Houdini made a side-line of exposing fraudulent mediums during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Other forms of skepticism over séances include:
- Skeptics generally consider both religious and secular séance to be scams, or at least a form of pious fraud, citing a lack of empirical evidence. Unusual vocal patterns or abnormal behaviors of mediums, are often quite easily faked by anyone with theatrical talent.
- The Jewish religion strictly prohibits taking part in anything to do with séances.
- Some Christians believe that spirits can be contacted but that it is forbidden by teachings in the Bible.
- With spirit or Ouija boards, the question remains, is one of the users moving the planchette with their fingers versus an actual spirit moving the planchette? Or if a single user is using the board, is their subconscious mind moving the planchette?
You might be guessing what I think about séances. I’ve never been to nor have I conducted one, so I can’t say whether or not I believe the events could be real or if it is beneficial in some way. I have never used a Oiuja board, either. I completely believe in the spirit world, after all, I run a web site about ghosts. However there are some things I don’t think should be messed with. Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson from TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society, featured on Sci Fi’s “Ghost Hunters” don’t recommend using Ouija boards. In light of this, I don’t, either.
